There's always work in the kitchen...

This morning I woke up early… I mean really early. It’s actually blasphemy to wake up before 10 on a Saturday morning. And I was sacrilegious enough to wake up at 6.30!

Well, I wasn’t really up because I wanted to. I was up to save my door from being broken down by the maid servant. She has been instructed to come around 7 am every morning, and she follows her instructions to the T every weekday morning.

But come a Saturday, when people want to sleep till late morning, and the maid gets really excited about her job. There is not much to do around in m house… only the basic cleaning of the rooms and the used utensils. And I think she found immense job satisfaction after only one week of working at my place.

Otherwise how else can I explain her earl arrival? I think there is a subtle lesson all HR’s and management students can learn from my experiences with the maid. You be good to your employee and serve refreshments at regular intervals, make the workplace comfortable to work in, and Voila! You won’t have a single late comer at the office. Infact, they will come before the scheduled work hours. Well, you can not really stop them from going home as soon as the clock strikes six, or from checking their personal email under the main official window, or taking long smoke or tea breaks… atleast, you will have happy employees!

And when you feel like sacking them, you will have enough reasons to show!

Management lesson over, lets come back to my waking up early.

I saved us a couple of thousand bucks this morning. I am sure my man will appreciate this, now that we are running on a tight budget, having recently shifted to a new home.

My maid seemed really enthusiastic about breaking down the door (we do not have a doorbell yet… told you… we are running on a budget)… I think she was trying to save herself the trouble of knocking on the door every morning.

My landlady wouldn’t appreciate her work tactics, I fathomed. So I groggily opened the door… saved my self the money and an earful from my grumpy ol LL (Land Lady).

Once I was up, and the maid had rushed through her morning rituals at my place (i.e. cleaning the floors and the utensils, not answering the call of nature), there was nothing much to do. I made myself a mug of hot tea and munched on a few biscuits… and drifted around the house a bit.

Then I walked into the kitchen.

All you people out there… who think that staying at home is equivalent to doing nothing other than watching TV and eating and sleeping… I would request you to modify your opinions.

Every time, you walk into the kitchen there is always some work or the other. I found an entire bag of masalas and pulses waiting to be poured in containers.

I have bought these colorful containers which add a little spice and flavor to my kitchen and I took the opportunity to fill them up and empty the packets.

The kitchen counter seems to be unclean most of the time, however much I clean it; so I wiped the counter top and poured the contents of the packets into containers, and then feeling satisfied with the job done, felt like recording this small bit of work I did on a Saturday morning.

All this might be unimportant to a lot of people out there, but it is important for me. This is the first time that I did something in the kitchen on a Saturday morning… and that too this early.

All this is new for me, and I am going to try and record everything for the future, when I will be used to working around in the kitchen. And doing such menial stuff will not matter any more.

These records will give me a taste of the past, of a woman’s first toddler steps into the world of the real woman.

These posts will be my records of my growing up.
